you aren’t really supportive of gender fuckery and gender weirdness if you can’t accept that sometimes men will be lesbians and sometimes women will be gay guys and sometimes the lesbian guy and gay guy who’s also a woman are the same person. if the only gender fuckery you support is identities that make sense to you, then dare i say that is not real support.

“Do you love this world? Do you cherish your humble and silky life? Do you adore the green grass, with its terror beneath? Do you also hurry, half-dressed and barefoot, into the garden, and softly, and exclaiming of their dearness, fill your arms with the white and pink flowers, with their honeyed heaviness, their lush trembling, their eagerness to be wild and perfect for a moment, before they are nothing, forever?”

The AI hype bubble is the new crypto hype bubble

Back in 2017 Long Island Ice Tea — known for its undistinguished, barely drinkable sugar-water — changed its name to “Long Blockchain Corp.” Its shares surged to a peak of 400% over their pre-announcement price. The company announced no specific integrations with any kind of blockchain, nor has it made any such integrations since.

If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:

One more reblog, this is long but for real read this, and if you have the time read the links. This is a fascinating discussion of where technology, art, and law meet and showcases some VERY strong rhetorical tools for dealing with the proponents of this toxic bullshit.

Any followers interested with technology, privacy, capitalism pluralistic is a great subscription (I get the email).

Also this isn’t the first AI hype cycle we’ve been through, we had first trough of disillusionment in the 70s, and then again in the 80s & 90s.

I started postgrad studies in artificial intelligence in early 2000’s with a focus on statistical natural language models (which is what ChatGPT is) and I dropped out after my supervisor was dealing with plagiarism acquisitions and although I was at a university with one of the largest computer science departments in Asia-Pacific region there wasn’t anyone else in the department focused on AI language models 🤷

ChatGPT is a very cool technology, but I’m very skeptical that we’ll find useful reliable applications for using it.

At the same time, as technology has become more mainstream, there’s more and more decision makers in companies that just don’t have the experience to evaluate these types of technologies. I work in a Fortune 500 company in the technology org, and I have four levels of management between me and the CEO, and not a single one of them have any technical background (instead they have backgrounds in sales/marketing etc).

There is going to be a lot of money spent on snake oil solutions that will lead to nothing - that’s capitalism in action!

This is how I feel about Joshua Trees. They and avocado trees produce fruit meant to be eaten and dispersed by giant ground sloths. Without them, the Joshua Trees’ range has shrunk by 90%.

(my own photos)

Not only they, but the entire Mojave ecosystem is still struggling to adapt since the loss of ground sloth dung. their chief fertilizer.

Many, many trees and plants in the Americas have widely-spaced, extremely long thorns that do nothing to discourage deer eating their leaves, but would’ve penetrated the fur of ground sloths and mammoths. Likewise, if you’ve observed a tree that drops baseball or softball-sized fruit which lies on the ground and rots, like Osage Oranges, which were great for playing catch at my school, chances are they were ground sloth or mammoth chow.

You can read about various orphaned plants and trees missing their megafauna in this poignant post:

peelingmandarins:

““Hell is other people” is only one side of the coin. The other side, which no one seems to mention, is also “Heaven is each other”. Hell is separateness, uncommunicability, self-centeredness, lust for power, for riches, for fame. Heaven on the other hand is very simple, and very hard: caring about your fellow beings. And that’s possible on a sustained basis only in collectivity.”
